DATELINE JUNE 2000 COOLUM

From the Editor

This month we launch the new front page of Ethelink.net, our official Home Page. It’s not much to look at really, but a quick loading page (I hope)  to direct people to where they want to go on our new site. Other improvements include updates to Suncoast Digital Gallery with a good list of art galleries. New also to the Navigator is a short technical story, this month about uploading and downloading  files using utility programs.

So stay bookmarked and return soon.

Local News

June brings us cold weather, even in Queensland with temperatures dipping to 6 degrees at night, well not exactly snow or even a frost, but it’s a lot colder that we had expected it to be here. So fortunately the rain has gone and the days are nice and warm and the skies are clear.

Two weeks ago we had a small housewarming get together. About a dozen people or so, both spare bedrooms were taken, with friends Tony and Marilyn coming up from Brisbane and Denise and Stephen coming from Frog Hollow. Also attending were Coolum locals Heck, Jenny, Marie, Phil A good night was had by all. However the weather turned bitterly the following morning when we went to an Art Show  at the Noosa Harbour Council building

Louise has started work again, landing the first job she applied for. She has a month’s work for the Maroochy council in Nambour, so we can drive to work together, and considering the cold, I’m not missing the chilly bike rides in the mornings.

Our backyard took a step forward last weekend when we moved 2m of topsoil onto the garden and lawn, with a load of manure and mulch its looking better.

Cheers for now

Ric

Tech Talk

In the first instalment to Tech Talk I look at uploading and downloading files to the Internet.

Firstly, downloading files from the Internet is the most popular option here, most users of the Internet will have tried this by now. Using your web browser to navigate to a site and clicking "download now" starts the download manager in your browser. You are usually given a choice of where you want to save your file and then the download manager starts to download the file. If the file is small this is an easy process. However it usually takes a lot of time to download even small files sometimes.

Nowadays when you buy software, a patch or update is usually available by the time the software hits the shelf and the patches or updates are usually quite large. If you have ever tried to download a file and your connection to your ISP has been cut after spending half an hour downloading your file, you know how frustrating this can be. Fortunately there are programs designed to alleviate this problem.

One program I found is Netzip download Deamon, which is a small unobtrusive program that will manage your files as you download them. The best feature of this is that if your connection is cut while downloading, it remembers how much of the file it has already downloaded and will resume the download when you reconnect. Download it (the old way) from here http://www.real.com/dldemon/

Uploading. The other side of the coin involves copying files from your computer to the Internet. Once again you can do this via some websites, which host bulletin boards, where you can type messages for others to read and swap file etc. Fortunecity.com and other free web page providers allow you to copy you web pages and files to their server through your web browser by following the links onscreen. The ICQ messanger program will allow you to send files to other users, as well as chat to them at the same time.

Then there is FTP (File Transfer Protocol) It is a system designed specifically for transferring data there are a number of simular programs around, but  I use WsFtp 32. This program displays two file browser windows. The fist being the files on your computer and the other being the files on the host computer. You can then choose to send files in either direction or set up directories and rename. It is the fastest way to transfer your files. With Ftp addresses you can also connect to a large range of sites offering software upgrades, patches, plugins, MP3, Avi and more.

Ask your ISP for their Ftp address so you can upload your web pages and graphics.

Do a web search in your browser on Ftp to find  pages offering Ftp sites to down load files.

WsFtp can be found here
